Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AED?
Automated external defibrillator is a computerized medical machine that recognizes the need for an electrical shock to be delivered to the heart of an unconscious victim of a sudden cardiac arrest.
Who can use an AED?
Anyone who has been certified in CPR/AED training. The training/certification must be renewed every 1 to 2 years to maintain an ongoing knowledge and skill level.
Does sudden cardiac arrest happen that frequently to warrant an AED?
Over 890 deaths occur daily outside the hospital. The American Heart Association states with the use of an AED as many as 100,000 deaths could be prevented each year.
Why have an AED in the workplace?
According to OSHA between 2001 -2002 there were 6625 deaths. Sudden cardiac arrest involves problems with the hearts electrical system, not only can it be caused by a sudden cardiac arrest but also by electrical shock and asphyxiation.
Why not just call 911 and wait for the ambulance?
The victims survival diminishes by 7 to 10% for each minute without the use of CPR & AED. After 10 minutes survival is rarely successful. The national average response time is 10 - 12 minutes. With congested urban areas, shopping malls, high rise office buildings and remote areas (where crews have to wait for volunteers to arrive), EMS responders could have difficulty responding in a timely manner.
How safe are AED's?
AED's are very safe. They are designed to analyze a shockable rhythm only and will deliver a shock to the victim that is in cardiac arrest. When used by a properly certified rescuer no risk is involved.
